In the years after Vietnam, Gerald lived in Virginia and South Carolina. He retired from the military as a colonel in 1989 and subsequently taught high school and coached soccer and football. Gerald is a highly decorated veteran whose medals include the Bronze Star, Vietnam Cross of Gallantry, and Defense Superior Service Medal. Gerald has used VA services to address skin cancer and PTSD, both of which he attributes to his time in Vietnam.
